Classic
Rectangular cards, traditional pedigree connectors. Ideal for printing on A3 or attaching to a report. Boxes are tinted pale teal for male, pale amber for female, neutral cream for other.
Add people, connect them in Unions, choose a layout, and export. Built around real family structures: two parents per child, blended families, divorces, adoptions and same-sex unions all supported from day one. Pick descendants, ancestors or hourglass. Pick from five visual themes. Free PNG export, no account.
Your tree stays in your browser. I never see it.
I built this tool because every other free family tree maker I tried either locked the export behind a signup, capped the number of people, or refused to draw a chart that did not fit the 1950s nuclear-family pattern. Real families have remarriages, blended children, adoptions and same-sex partnerships. The data model here was built around that from day one, not patched on top of an org-chart layout.
Open the page, build your tree, save a PNG. Nothing is uploaded anywhere. The tree auto-saves to your browser between visits. Premium adds clean SVG, A3 PDF and JSON exports for one lifetime payment, and the same code unlocks every other ClicknFile free tool you open today and any new one I release.
Each layout answers a different question about your family. Switch with one click in the toolbar.
The starting person is at the top. Their children, grandchildren and so on stack downward, generation by generation. Useful when you want to show every line that came out of a single ancestor, for example "everyone descended from my great-grandmother". This is the closest layout to a corporate org chart, with the difference that each generation can branch through multiple Unions.
The starting person is at the bottom. Their two parents sit above, their four grandparents above that, and so on. This is the classic pedigree chart that genealogists use to trace a single line back through history. The chart doubles in width with every generation, so it stays compact for five or six generations and starts to need a large paper format beyond that.
The starting person sits at the centre. Ancestors stack upward, descendants stack downward. The chart looks like an hourglass with the proband at the pinch. Visually striking, often the best export for printing, and the default for first-time visitors because it shows the whole story without a second click.
Pick the theme that matches what you want to do with the chart. Every theme reads the same underlying tree, so switching never loses data.
Rectangular cards, traditional pedigree connectors. Ideal for printing on A3 or attaching to a report. Boxes are tinted pale teal for male, pale amber for female, neutral cream for other.
Photo-forward layout, rounded boxes, photo or initials take the top half. The best choice when you have portraits of every family member and want the chart to feel like a Notion gallery.
Name and dates only, no photos, tight spacing. Optimal for trees of one hundred people or more, where Classic would no longer fit on a single page.
Cream background, Cormorant Garamond serif type, browned connectors. Aimed at the gift or heirloom use case. Print on textured paper for a wedding or a milestone birthday and it reads as an heirloom poster.
Organic green connectors and rounded cards. A friendlier feel than the strict pedigree style, useful when the chart is shared with younger family members or used in a classroom.
Build a four-generation Heritage chart, export to A3 PDF, print on textured paper and frame it. The Heritage theme was designed for exactly this.
Build a Descendants layout with photos in Cards theme. Print as PNG and pin to a board so every relative can see how they connect to the rest.
Use Ancestors mode and the notes field on each person. Mark uncertain ancestors as "unknown" partners. Export a JSON backup before every research session to roll back if a new lead changes the lineage.
The Tree theme and the descendants layout make it easy to show a clean family tree for a history or social-studies class. No signup means a teacher can hand out the URL to every student in two minutes.
This is not a marketing line. The tool runs entirely as static HTML and JavaScript in your browser. Every change you make is auto-saved to your browser local storage. Nothing is uploaded to any server, including photos which are stored as base64 inside the same local store.
The only network calls the tool ever makes are: the PayPal Smart Buttons SDK when you open the premium modal, the validate-code endpoint when you paste an 8-character premium code, and a small analytics ping (GoatCounter, no cookies, no personal data) on page load. None of these calls send your tree.
The living-person privacy mode adds another layer for users who plan to publish the tree publicly. When enabled, every person without a death date renders as "Living · sex" only, and dates, places and photos are hidden from the export. The data is still in your browser, the privacy mode only affects what the chart shows.
If you want a permanent backup that survives a browser cache wipe, use the premium JSON export. It writes a full copy of the tree to a single file on your disk, with every person, every union, every photo, every setting. The safest habit is to download a JSON copy after a significant editing session and store it alongside the rest of your important family documents.
The three layouts answer different questions and produce visually different charts even from the same underlying tree. A quick rule of thumb:
Switching layouts is non-destructive. The tool re-computes positions from the same Person and Union data, so you can flip back and forth to see which layout fits before exporting. None of your edits are lost.
If you only need a chart for one project and you do not want to install software or upload your data, ClicknFile's free PNG export is the fastest path. Here is how it stacks up against the alternatives I tested while building this.
| Tool | Signup | Free PNG | Two parents | Same-sex unions | Privacy mode | Lifetime price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ClicknFile | None | Yes, with watermark; clean in premium | Built-in | Yes | One-click bulk | $9.99 across every tool | Quick, modern chart with real exports |
| FamilySearch | Free account required | Yes, via screenshot only | Yes | Limited | Built-in for living relatives | Free, account based | Deep genealogy research with shared databases |
| MyHeritage Tree Builder | Account required | Limited free tier, paid tiers from monthly fee | Yes | Yes | Configurable | Subscription | DNA matching and family discovery |
| Ancestry.com tree | Account required | Paid tiers | Yes | Yes | Configurable | Subscription | Cross-referencing historical records |
| Free Excel templates | None | Manual print or screenshot | Workaround only | Workaround only | Manual | Often free, sometimes paid | Offline editing inside Excel |
The big online platforms are stronger if your goal is research, DNA matching or cross-referencing historical records. They are heavier if you just want a clean chart you own forever. The Excel templates ship as a downloadable file you control, but they need workarounds for non-traditional family structures. ClicknFile sits between those two: quick to use, no signup, modern-family aware, with a real export and a one-time payment for the premium formats.
This tool is one static HTML file with inline CSS and one JavaScript module. No framework, no build step, no node_modules at runtime. The layout engine is a custom tidy-tree variant that treats each Union as a virtual joining node, which is what makes the two-parents-per-child convention work without forcing the data into the single-parent shape that pure d3-hierarchy assumes. The PNG export rasterizes the same SVG you see on screen, so the chart you download is pixel-equivalent to what you see in the browser. The PDF export lazy-loads jsPDF the first time you need it, so the page stays small for visitors who only want the free PNG.
I run ClicknFile as a one-person studio. If something does not work the way you expect, or if you have a feature request that would help your specific family tree, I read every message that comes through the contact page.
Yes. No signup, no time limit, no node limit, no payment for PNG export. Your tree stays in your browser. The optional 9.99 USD lifetime premium unlocks SVG, A3 PDF and JSON exports and works across every ClicknFile free tool you open.
No. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for. Open the page and start building.
Only in your browser. The tree auto-saves to local storage. Nothing is sent to any server, including photos which are stored as base64 in the same local store. If you clear your browser data the tree is lost, so export a JSON copy if you need a backup.
Yes. The data model is built around Unions instead of single parents, so a child has two parents joined by a Union node. Unions can be married, partnered, separated, divorced or unknown. Same-sex unions are fully supported. Adopted children render with a dashed connector to their adoptive parents. Remarriages place a single person inside multiple Unions side by side.
Yes. Toggle the living-privacy mini-control and every person without a death date is rendered as "Living" with sex only, hiding dates, places and photos. Useful when you want to publish a tree publicly without exposing personal details.
Three layouts: descendants (starting person at the top, children and grandchildren below), ancestors (starting person at the bottom, parents and grandparents above), and hourglass (starting person in the middle with ancestors above and descendants below). Hourglass is the default for new trees.
Same chart, but inside a real Excel file with VBA macros. Enter people in a sheet, click one button, the chart redraws itself. Useful when you prefer offline editing, want to email the file to relatives, or need to live inside Excel for other reasons. Windows only, $19.99 one time, instant download from Etsy.
One 8-character code, $9.99 lifetime. The same code unlocks SVG, A3 PDF and JSON exports inside every ClicknFile free tool you open today and any new one I release. No subscription, no per-seat fee.
The code is sent by email after PayPal checkout. Stays valid forever, you can paste it on any browser to unlock there too. Need help? Read the premium-code FAQ.
Copy a table from your spreadsheet and paste it below. The first row should be a header. Columns can be in any order. Empty cells are fine. I create one person per row and infer unions from fatherId + motherId pairs.
id firstName lastName maidenName sex birthDate deathDate fatherId motherId partnerId notes
